Travelling on Underground

In the London Underground system is not only the oldest and largest metro in the world, it is also one of the most modern and comfortable, works for 20 hours every day. Each subway line has a different name and color. This makes it easy for you to follow the route maps that are available. Upon his arrival at a station, look for signs of color code, which will direct you to the line you need.

Metro system is divided into 6 fare zones. The center of the city is located in zone 1. The ticket price depends on how many zones you travel through. You can buy a ticket on a machine or ticket office at any Underground station. You can buy a single ticket or return, travel valid on the date indicated on the ticket. Travelcards offer the best value.

If you know what you want, why not use the ticket machines - which can save you time. Just follow the instructions. Usually it gives change, but please try to use the correct money if you can. Help keep change for customers who really need it. Many stations, especially in central London, have ticket gates. It must pass through them to enter and exit the system.

To pass through the gates simply insert the ticket (face upwards) into the slot on the front of the machine. Your ticket will pass through the machine and appear from a slot on top. Take your ticket from the slot and open doors to through. If you have completed your journey (and the ticket is used) the doors will open, but the machine will retain your ticket.

Remember that you must buy a ticket to the right destination before your trip, or you will be fined a fee of 10 €. Try to avoid the busiest times between 08.00 and 09.30 am and 5.00 to 6.30 pm, Monday to Friday. If you have a buggy, wheelchair or heavy luggage, special door is provided, please ask a staff member for assistance.

On escalators take extra care with children, strollers or wheelchairs. Where possible, fold the stroller, but still adhere to the children. Be careful when you walk in and out of an escalator, especially when carrying luggage. Stand on the right and hold on the railing. Avoid standing near the edge of the stairs.

Underground will continue until around 0:30. After this period you can use an extensive network of night buses. Most buses pass through Trafalgar Square at night and serve as theaters, cinemas and entertainment areas.
